Chileans ONE education

The first thing that we should ask when we thought about Chilean education system it’s what do we understand for “education”. Is it just pure knowledge of math, science and history, as schools and university’s give today, or we should expect something more? I think our educational system has a lot of problems today, including the most mentioned that are the profit in public schools or the bad quality of the education that children and young people are receiving. I agree with all of those demands, because it’s unfair that only a few can have access to good education meanwhile others don’t. It’s also an injustice that people who don’t have the economical background to go to an expensive university should stay out of the opportunities that a public institution must bring. But I want to make an emphasis on the second demand of quality.

As I said in the beginning, the first thing we should ask ourselves is what we understand for education. I think that in the last decades, education has been considerate as a “pack” of basic knowledge and when you get it you can choose the path you want to follow. I don’t agree with this vision. Why? Because I think there are many kinds of intelligence and many ways to educate a person. The system we have now only measures one type of intelligence, but what about all the other kinds like arts or local traditions. I always ask myself why we educate children with a generic system forgetting the incredible and diverse cultural context where we live. Traditions have been forgotten by this system and in the end that contributes to make disappear our culture that is the first education we have. I think that our educational system has to change, but not considering again only one way of education. We must develop other potentials in young people and encourage them to explore and to build a new conception of education. To conclude, I say that a diverse education that develops all kinds of intelligence and potentials is the one that is missing today in Chile.

Our time is NOW

Movie Review

Name of Movie: Earth 2100

Describe/list/ outline the main themes of the movie.  (50 words)

The movie´s main themes were about the process that planet Earth is experiencing this last years and how, in a hypothetical way, the world would be in a hundred more years. It shows a destroyed world through the story of a fictional woman called Lucy. It talks about environment, politics, and our responsibility as humans with the world.

Write a review (200 words) of the video.  Highlight the importance of the movie’s information/ themes/ topics to your own personal experience and professional perspective.

The movie shows us, in a mixture of fiction and reality, all the problems that are happening these, like global warming, economic crisis or the overuse of natural resources. It tells the story of Lucy, born in 2009, and how while she grows, the planet Earth collapses after humanity and governments didn’t act on the right time. Through her story, we can see how the way of life we now have is not bearable, and if that we continue this path; our destiny is to destroy this planet Earth. The movie shows only what happens in the USA, so it´s a little annoying but despite of that, we can see here the reality of the whole world and how society and our so called leaders will be affected by these global changes, transforming our way of life, because our resources will diminish with the years. At the end of the movie, after we saw a destroyed world, there´s a hope final, when we understand that we have the power to act now to stop this.

For me as a future architect, this reaffirms the commitment that I have now and in the future with nature when I design a building. Construction is one of the most contaminating things on Earth, so it is our responsibility to find new ways to build sustainable buildings before and after they are made.

List a minimum of three facts, pieces of important information or “other” from the video that you would like to remember and would want to tell a friend about.

 1.    I really didn´t like the movie, not because I´m not agree with its themes or that I´m one of those who don´t believe in global warming. I disliked it because on the contrary, I´m really interested in what is happening right now on Earth, and I think this movie don´t gives the message properly. The strategy it uses is not very good because it tries to be a documental but at the same time a fiction movie, so that confuses the principal theme. Is it global warming and the real facts that are happening these days, or is it Lucy fictional story whit her husband death and life problems? Is it a science fiction movie or a documental? The movie is not clear in what she wants to be.

 2. The movie shows what happens at USA, so it´s a little bit annoying because it shows how others are collapsing the world and they, at the end, can be “our saviors” (like they always think they are). The movie didn´t tell when for example the United States where the only ones who didn´t sing the Kyoto Treatment (90’s) to face global warming. I´m not saying that USA is the only guilty in the world, we all are, but I don´t enjoy when they show themselves like heroes and blame China, India or South America.

3. There are good thing in the movie too, despite the fictional story that at the end results to be speculative. The last 10 minutes show us real and actual tools to fight global warming and how NOW we can act. If I may recommend, I would tell you to see a French documentary called HOME that is very good and shows real things that are happening now on this planet. HOME show us pictures of the Earth that really touches you and makes you understand that this problem is real and not a fictional story. That’s the message that I kept from Home and from the end of this film: we must act now.

About S+S-G

S+S-G

Hello dear visitor, welcome to my blog. My name is Sebastián Simonetti-Grez (S+S-G) and I´m from Chile, South America. I currently study architecture in Universidad de Chile (4th year) and live in this great city Santiago. Some short facts about me for you to know is that i love to read, specially Julio Cortazar or history novels and that I love films (Stanley Kubrick is my favorite director).

Today I´m going to tell you in a short way how were my summer holidays this 2014. They started very late, more late than other university in the country, at December 31, new year's night. To celebrate this new year and to be at last free of classes and architecture, me and my friends of class went to El Tabo and spend there three days enjoying the sun, the beach, dancing, soccer and food. When I return to Santiago I missed the sand and the water so I took my things again and travelled to Viña del Mar with one of my best friends from childhood. We were there for ten days giving ourselves the relax that we deserve after a long year.
But this journey was expensive, so I needed to recover all the money that I´ve expended. Architecture was back and I started to work with an older friend helping him to build building models. Another friend that is my classmate also went to help. I worked two weeks, but I still don´t get the money paid! Despite of that, it was a really good experience working there, because my friend, who is already an architect, teach me a lot of tips for works at university.

When work was done, it was time for relax again. Me and my family travelled to south and spend ther for almost all February. We visited Santa Cruz in Valle Colchagua and proved some wines, then we did a long journey to Capitan Pastene, in Araucania, and there we tested their famous "pastas". The last part of the vacations we spend them in a house near Pucon in Lago Villarrica. The house was not in the city itself, it was in the middle of the forest in the northeast part of the lake, so it was very peaceful and we enjoyed food, the view, sleeping and the nature all together. Another friend of my childhood came to visit me and spend a few days with us. When the month was getting over and March was approaching, we returned to Santiago.
